HOW TO CREATE DECORATIVE TECHNIQUES

ROSES & CASTLES

Narrow boat pictural painting has been carried out almost from the time the first boat was used to carry goods from one factory to the next, although at the start in a simpler form. Some had the name of the owner on the side and some had images and colours that would identify the owner or the family name.

Roses and Castles is the expression used to describe the decorative painting of the modern, and refurbishment of the old, narrow boats of today and yesterday.

Preparation

The doors are steel plate with three quarter inch plywood fixed to the back to create a panel door effect. The doors had been protected with a high quality marine paint which needed rubbing down to create a smooth surface to paint on.

The Painting

The doors where first painted in a base colour so I could create the oak grain effect. The roses where painted in the centre panels and the castles on the top raised panels. The doors where protected with yacht varnish.

The Boat

The boat was at Uplands Basin Marina at Anderton near Northwich, just next to the famous Anderton boat lift.
